Proverbs 5:1-5 (Amplified)
1 My son, be attentive to my Wisdom (godly Wisdom learned by actual and costly
experience), and incline your ear to my understanding (of what is becoming and prudent for
you), 2 That you may exercise proper discrimination and discretion and your lips may guard
and keep knowledge and the wise answer (to temptation). 3 For the lips of a loose woman drip
honey as a honeycomb, and her mouth is smoother than oil; 4 But in the end she is bitter as
wormwood, sharp as a two-edged and devouring sword. 5 Her feet go down to death; her steps
take hold of Sheol, Hades, the place of the dead.
This scripture is about how a father instructs his son to flee the harlotry of the
world. Now when he's talking about this strange, loose woman, he's talking about a
world system that has come to steal his potential for being a king. She has come to steal
his potential for being a man and coming to steal his potential for being loyal.
I believe that David was trying to save him the pain that he felt in his life.
What's the pain that he was trying to save Solomon from? Why is he telling him this?
He's trying to save him from the pain of getting something and losing it.
How often I've had to sit down and counsel someone that is totally broken
because they've lost the marriage that they really love and the first thing I have to do
is bring them back to, why did they lose it? What did they do to maintain it? Why did that
person go? The pain is so real and it is so hurtful and you think, "If only I could have
been there earlier in your life and know what I know now, I could have helped you. I could
have prevented this moment in your life". I believe that this is what David was trying
to prevent.
