Revelations 8:10 (NIV)
"The third angel sounded his trumpet, and a great star, blazing like a torch, fell
from the sky on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water 11 the name of the star is
Wormwood. A third of the waters turned bitter, and many people died from the waters that had
become bitter".
Wormwood just simply means bitter. The church is a well, an oasis in a desert land.
The third angel falls upon the rivers which are the churches and the people of the churches
and when people become bitter in their spirit through unforgiveness, when they try to
evangelise they actually destroy the people they are evangelising. Instead of drinking of
their spirit and becoming so enthusiastic about Christ and so enthusiastic about the
kingdom, so enthusiastic about serving, they start to become critical masses and begin to
cannibalise each other. They start to destroy one another and all that come and makes their
way to this well. They should be drinking of this pure, sweet, bubbling water that flows
from the throne of God but they start to drink of this bitter water and die.
When you are drinking from a clear brook, there is an excitement about Jesus. There
is an excitement about life. There is an excitement that burns you. You will want to read
the bible. You will want to be at church. But the moment we are offended and we become
bitter, we start to put in all this bitterness, mistrust, suspicion and judgement rather
than faith into the hearts of the disciples and all of a sudden, they just start to die.
